The New City Catechism

The Journey Church of Marietta uses the New City Catechism in Sunday Morning Services as another means by which we may teach the truths of the Christian Faith.

A catechism is simply a series of fixed questions, answers, or precepts that are used for teaching purposes.  There are many catechisms of the Protestant Church, the most notable are the Geneva Catechism, the Westminster Larger and Shorter, and the Heidelberg Catechism, all of which are great tools for instruction and teaching, however, the language, though beautiful and precise, is archaic in terms of today's modern English.

The New City Catechism, with its elegant and robust modern English, is composed of 52 questions and answers, one for each week of the year.  The New City Catechism is a blending of the above-mentioned catechisms, which gives us a good exposure to some of the riches of the Reformation period catechisms.

With only 52 questions and answers it is easy to use this as a tool for devotions and family worship.  Additionally, the website provides a bible verse, written commentary, and a prayer to go along with each one.  For those that will use this with their children in family worship there is a child's adaptation and music that accompanies them.

We, the Elders at the Journey, desire to do two things well;  Sunday Morning Service and Journey Groups.  We want everything that we do to be saturated with the truth of the Gospel and reciting the New City Catechism as a corporate body is just one of the ways we do that.

Take some time to check the New City Catechism website below as we know it will bless you and your family immensely.
