When I get the chance I've found that I really enjoy blogging about resources that I use to teach and preach.  There are so many great God-honoring resources out there on John and I can't help but want to share those blessings with others in the hope that they would be encouraged in that same way I feel like I have been.  One of the biggest blessings to me while teaching through John has been finding out that people in my own congregation have been picking up some of these resources and studying for themselves the riches of wisdom inspired by John.

CarsonFarewellDiscourse     With that said, I wanted to share yet another resource that has been a great help to me over the past 10 weeks of teaching.  Yesterday we concluded that 10 week stretch over what's known as the Farewell Discourse and High Priestly Prayer located in John 14-17.  These are the last moments of Christ's teaching to the 11 disciples (11 because Judas had left to betray Jesus) before his arrest and crucifixion.  D.A. Carson (whose commentary on John is one I already use) published a book originally in 1980 which focuses on just this section of scripture.

Appropriately named "The Farewell Discourse and Final Prayer of Jesus", Carson's book is very insightful and efficiently tackles the deep doctrinal truths that this text is famous for.

Using the NIV translation, Carson breaks these passages down into 10 chapters.

1.  Prologue, John 13
2.  An Introduction to Triumphant Faith, John 14:1-14
3.  The Coming of the Spirit of Truth, John 14:15-24
4.  Three Clarifications, John 14:25-31
5.  Spiritual Intimacy with Jesus Christ, John 15:1-16
6.  Counting the Cost, John 15:17-16:4
7.  Two Special Ministries of the Spirit, John 16:5-15
8.  But First, the Cross, John 16:16-33
9.  Jesus Prays for Himself and for His Followers, John 17:1-19
10.  Jesus Prays for All Believers and for the World, John 17:20-26
