Journey to The Journey

subheader Matthew

Being such a popular book of the Bible there is no shortage of resources to supplement your study of the Gospel of Matthew.  That being said, anytime I preach through a book of the Bible I share any and all resources that I'm using in the hopes that those who wish to take their study a little further will read along with me.  Below is a list of some great resources that I'm currently reading as I preach through this incredible book.

JCRyleMatthew1.  Expository Thoughts On Matthew, J.C. Ryle:  While preaching through the Gospel of John I was fortunate enough to come across Ryle's 3 volumes of research on that book.  After reading through his commentary on John I became a huge fan of this well-known credible scholar.  Ryle was first on my list when I began gathering resources for this teaching series and his style of delivery is one I have come to appreciate immensely.  If you're looking for a devotional to work through while studying Matthew then I'd suggest this one as it is a devotional style commentary.

Grant Osborne2.  Matthew, Exegetical Commentary On The New Testament Series, Grant R. Osborne:  If it's a more technical commentary that you're after then I'd say this is one you'd appreciate.  This commentary has all of the greek available and breaks down the meaning behind each sentence.  This resource also provides a lot of cross references that analyze how specific greek words are used elsewhere in scripture.  This commentary has been incredibly helpful to me and is one I go to weekly when putting together my sermons.

ODonnell3.  Matthew, Preaching The Word Series, Douglas Sean O'Donnell:  I've read through a couple of the commentaries in the Preaching The Word Series (Revelation & Ecclesiastes) and have found them very helpful.  Sometimes charting out how to preaching through a book of the Bible can be an intimidating feat and this commentary helps you think through how to do that.  In addition to helping you chart out your preaching schedule this commentary suggests many helpful tips on how to preach and teach each passage as well.

Sproul4.  Matthew, St. Andrew's Expositional Commentary Series, R.C. Sproul:  I always enjoy reading and/or listening to R.C. Sproul teach something.  He has a way of anticipating and directly addressing the sort of questions that arise in my mind as I read through a section of scripture.  He enjoys and takes time to think through biblical concepts philosophically which is something that I really appreciate about him.  This would be another great resource for anyone to read through as it is more of a devotional style commentary.

Jackman5.  Teaching Matthew, Unlocking The Gospel Of Matthew For The Bible Teacher, David Jackman & William Philip:  I've used a few of the commentaries from this series (John, Amos & 1 Peter) in the past and find them useful in communicating the overarching message of the book you're teaching.  This book zooms out to focus on the big picture concepts presented in Matthew and brings to light the ultimate purpose and agenda of the text.  If you wanted a CliffsNotes style commentary on Matthew then this may be the one to snag.

I pray that these resources will be a blessing to you in the same way they've been a blessing to me!
