I always appreciate it when pastors cite sources.  I give every pastor the benefit of the doubt that they are praying and reading their bible in preparation for teaching.  However, I'm always curious as to what other sources they are influenced by.  One pastor once courageously proclaimed to me, "I never use ANY other sources and completely create my OWN messages and curriculum, just me and my bible."  Really!?  We have 2000 years of Jesus-loving scholars out there with endless thoughts on Scripture and that guy couldn't care less?

I'll be the first to tell you that I use other sources to influence my messages outside of prayer and bible time.  I want to pick the brains of credible God-fearing scholars to see if I'm coming to similar conclusions on passages of scripture.  If you're a regular at the Journey you already know this from my continuous quoting of authors from week to week.  I also think it's important to cite sources while doing so which is why I often blog about them.  My hope in doing so is that the people of The Journey will take up and read along with me!

Below are 2 additional sources that have been really helpful to me over the past 8 months of teaching on John's account.

Pink1.  Exposition of the Gospel of John, by Arthur W. Pink

Pink's commentary was recommended to me by a buddy of mine and is very efficient and easy to read.  There have been many times when I've found myself hung up on certain heavy concepts in John and Pink is a great go-to guy in those moments.  Pink has a way of summarizing those deep truths in very understandable terms.ArthurPink

Aside from his gift of communicating God's word, Arthur W. Pink has a fascinating testimony.  You can read a snippet of that testimony HERE in which his involvement leading an anti-Christian cult during his youthful years (early 1900's) is described.

Darrell Bock2.  Jesus According To Scripture, Restoring the Portrait from the Gospels, by Darrell L. Bock

Bock is a research professor at Dallas Theological Seminary and has a great resource here.  Part 3 of his book is dedicated entirely to Jesus in the Gospel of John.  Bock does a great job of explaining the context behind each passage and has also been a great go-to resource for me while teaching through John.

I pray that these sources are a blessing to you!

Eager to teach through more of John this Sunday,
